About Faro Airport (FAO)
Faro International Airport (IATA: FAO) serves the entire Algarve region and is one of Portugal's most important
summer tourism hubs. It sits just 4 km west of Faro city centre, making it one of Europe's most conveniently
located beach destination airports. During the peak summer season (July–August), it handles an enormous volume
of charter and scheduled flights from across Europe.
Key airlines serving Faro include TAP Air Portugal which dominates the domestic Lisbon–Faro route with up to 20
flights per day along with Ryanair, easyJet, and various charter carriers during summer. From the US, most
travellers connect through Lisbon or a major European hub.
What Awaits You in the Algarve
The Algarve is Portugal's sun-drenched southern province, stretching 150 km along the Atlantic coast. Faro
Airport places you within easy reach of:
- Albufeira: the Algarve's most popular resort town, known for its lively beach scene and
nightlife.
- Lagos: a historic walled town with dramatic golden cliffs and some of Portugal's most
photographed beaches.
- Vilamoura: a premium marina resort with championship golf courses and a yacht-lined
harbour.
- Tavira: a quieter, beautifully preserved town known for its Roman bridge, island beaches,
and traditional charm.
- Ria Formosa Natural Park: a protected coastal lagoon of tidal islands, wildlife, and
pristine sandbars, accessible by ferry from Faro.
The Algarve has a true Mediterranean climate: warm, dry summers and mild winters. Rain is rare between June and
September, making it one of Europe's most reliably sunny destinations.
Best Time to Fly to Faro
- July–August: Peak season. Faro Airport is at its busiest, beaches are packed, and fares are
at their highest. Book well in advance if you're set on summer.
- April–June: Arguably the Algarve's best season — warm, green, far fewer crowds, and
meaningfully cheaper flights. The Ria Formosa Festival runs July–August for a taste of local culture.
- September–October: Still warm enough to swim, prices drop, and the summer rush fades. An
ideal window for couples and those seeking a calmer experience.
- November–March: Off-peak. Ideal for golfers, hikers, and culture seekers. Flights are
cheapest of the year.
The cheapest month to fly to Faro (from within Europe) is typically May, with April a close second.
Getting Around from Faro Airport
Faro Airport is well-connected by road and public transport. A taxi from the airport to Faro city centre takes
around 10 minutes. Public buses link the airport to the central bus station, from where coaches serve the entire
Algarve coast. Car rental is widely available at the airport and is the most flexible option if you plan to
explore beyond the major resort areas.
FAQs
If your primary destination is the Algarve, fly direct to Faro (FAO) it puts you
in the heart of the region immediately, saving 2.5–3 hours of road travel compared to arriving via Lisbon.
However, if you can't find a direct Faro flight from your departure city, or want to combine Lisbon
sightseeing with an Algarve beach holiday, flying into Lisbon and taking a domestic connection (TAP runs
up to 20 Lisbon–Faro flights daily) or renting a car is a very workable alternative.
Faro Airport is exceptionally well-positioned for the central and eastern
Algarve. Approximate driving times: Faro city (10 min), Vilamoura (25 min), Albufeira (40 min), Tavira (30
min), Lagos (1 hr 15 min), and Sagres (1 hr 45 min). For western Algarve destinations like Lagos and
Sagres, renting a car at the airport is strongly recommended to avoid long and infrequent coach
connections.
TAP Air Portugal is the primary carrier on the Lisbon–Faro domestic route (up to
20 flights daily). For international routes, Ryanair, easyJet, British Airways, and various charter
airlines serve Faro from across Europe during the summer season. From the US, there are currently no
nonstop transatlantic services to Faro — most travellers connect through Lisbon, London, or another
European hub.
Ria Formosa is a protected coastal lagoon covering 170 km² along the Algarve
coast and one of the most important wetland ecosystems in Europe, home to species including the purple
gallinule and flamingo. From Faro, ferries depart regularly to the barrier islands within the park —
including Ilha Deserta and Ilha do Farol — where you'll find pristine, crowd-free beaches and clear water.
The ferry terminal is a short walk from Faro's Old Town and sailings run throughout the day.
For July and August travel to Faro peak Algarve season booking 10–14 weeks in
advance is strongly advisable to secure reasonable fares. Faro is one of Europe's most popular summer
beach destinations, and capacity on direct routes from northern Europe fills quickly. If you're connecting
through Lisbon or a European hub, you may find slightly more flexibility, but accommodation in popular
resorts books up equally fast, so early planning pays dividends on multiple fronts.
